Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugars and disturbances of carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Haitians are considered a high-risk population for the development of DM2. Obesity is also a significant risk factor for diabetes. Currently, there is an epidemic of obesity in the US population, including Haitians.
